Unemployment Aid Extension Blocked

Unemployment insurance continues to be a hot issue on Capitol Hill with bills extending unemployment coverage periodically igniting debate over rising costs and the inherent waste that exists in many state programs. The most recent attempt to extend benefits and provide aid to state governments was blocked by Senate Republicans who argued the measure would add too much to the federal deficit. The extension was tacked to a bill that would raise taxes on buyout fund managers. Unemployment insurance is plagued by waste, fraud and inefficiencies; real reform that addresses the weaknesses of the unemployment system is needed before millions of more dollars is wasted.
