The Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Florida’s insurance commissioner Kevin McCarty is defending the 140-some home insurance rate increases that his office has approved in the last year and a half.

One of the biggest factors justifying rate increases? Sinkholes.

McCarty says that sinkhole claims, a big  concern of the Florida legislature, are “growing exponentially” – his office is said to be releasing a report on sinkhole claims later this month.

We couldn’t wait that long for our sinkhole questions to be answered, and this week’s podcast – which will be posted at 8am Friday morning – features sinkhole expert Dr. Robert Brinkmann, Professor Of Geography at the University of South Florida.

A Q&A with Lynne McChristian, the Florida representative for the Insurance Information Institute, will accompany the podcast.
